BERLIN—Germany’s ruling coalition is seeking to strip former chancellor Gerhard Schröder of his office in the country’s parliament over increased criticism of his refusal to distance himself from Russian President Vladimir Putin and to loosen his close ties to Russian energy.

Germany’s three governing parties, including Mr. Schröder’s own Social Democratic Party, plan to reassign the former chancellor’s staff in the Bundestag because he no longer performs duties related to his past functions as chancellor, according to a budget committee document seen by The Wall Street Journal.

“The budget committee notes that former chancellor Schröder no longer has any ongoing obligations from his office,” the parties wrote in the document.
