U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson welcomed Finland’s and Sweden's applications to join NATO Wednesday, saying Russian President Vladimir Putin had triggered what he called “an historic day” for the alliance and the world.

“Not long ago, nobody would have predicted this step, but Putin’s appalling ambitions have transformed the geopolitical contours of our continent,” Mr. Johnson said in a tweet.

The two Nordic countries formally applied for membership of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization on Wednesday, breaking with a decadeslong defense doctrine that has seen them balance political and security partnerships with other Western nations while staying out of formal military alliances.
